Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands, softback adventure for D&D 5th edition

Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands, softback adventure for D&D 5th edition

“Hidden deep in the borderland forest, bandits lurk in the ruined castle of a long-dead border lord. Their incessant raids draw a band of neophyte heroes to the derelict keep. There they discover fouler, more odious dangers lurk below the ruins.

Dare you brave the terrors of the Shadowed Keep to crush that which lurks within or will darkness shroud the surrounding lands?

Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands is an adventure for 1st-level characters compatible with the 5th edition of the world’s most popular roleplaying game. Designed for the Duchy of Ashlar campaign setting the adventure can be easily inserted into a GM’s home campaign.

“If you’re like me, then you are a sucker for old school on-the-frontier dungeon crawls. Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands is more than an homage to those days of yore. It plays and expands on the theme with intriguing characters, compelling stories, and cunning encounters. There is such a wealth of adventure packed into this ruined little keep that it will keep your players engaged session after session, and keep them coming back for more. So make a run for the junk food and pop, come up with pithy character hooks, don’t forget to buy a 10-foot pool, and always keep your wits about you. It’s that kind of adventure and more.”

—Stephen Radney MacFarland

“…it is all about the details in this particular adventure – the whole adventure makes for such an immensely detailed place, the foes and their tactics are so detailed that actually RUNNING the adventure is a blast, especially with all the things to show your players. Even better, the module provides quite a challenge… we had a surprisingly awesome time while clearing out the keep…I’ll settle for a final verdict of 5 stars for this very old-school module.”

–Endzeitgeist

“Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands is an excellent location-based adventure; not only in design but also in flavour and layout. Every single room within the keep is extensively described and detailed, making the GM’s job much easier, and the flavour of which change or grow as the PCs get deeper and deeper into the adventure, which avoids the feeling of repetitious or mundane. Don’t expect the same old thing when you enter a new room, because you will possibly be very surprised at what you find.””

—Aaron T. Huss (Roleplayer’s Chronicle)

“If you’re looking for a new module to kick off a 1st level campaign, definitely check out Shadowed Keep on the Borderland from Creighton Broadhurst and Raging Swan Press. It has a little bit of everything and an open feel that gives your players room to explore at their pace.”

—Brian Fitzpatrick (Game Knight Reviews)

“Following the background is a footnote suggesting how a GM might incorporated the Shadowed Keep into their own campaign, among which is put forth what is probably my favourite part of the module’s potential: once the party has cleared the keep, they might endeavour to claim and rebuild it themselves. Given the thorough detail and flavour of the environs throughout the module itself, I love this prospective aspect and feel that it could serve as the foundation for a campaign in and of itself.”

“A must have.”

–bookrat (five stars)

“Once again, Raging Swan Press has produced a book that I feel should be in every GM’s toolkit. GM’s Miscellany: Wilderness Dressing is a flawless example of a game aid; I anticipate that it will get worn and dog-eared long before it runs out of utility.”

–Ken Pawlik (five stars)

“I highly recommend picking it up, as I consider the sheer volume of information in the book well worth the price.”

“One thing I haven’t mentioned is the layout and graphic design of Raging Swan books. They are beautiful in their simplicity. Clean white pages, small print, simple layout and small amounts art that suggest rather than locks you in an image. And this one has better bookmarks.”

–Stipe K (five stars)

“Overall, this is a highly useful product for GM’s running an outdoor campaign.”

–Itchy (five stars)

“Wilderness Dressing” is still one of the best RPG supplements I’ve ever read and should be required GM material for every campaign. I know my games have improved dramatically because of it. If you have the money for this, buy it. If you don’t have the money for this, figure out a way to get it. If you’re not a GM, gift it to your GM. He’ll love you forever. In short, if you play Pathfinder, buy this book. I promise it’s worth it.”

–Whack a Rogue (five stars)

“Like the Dungeon Dressing compilation, well worth its weight in gold. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.”

–Sethvir (five stars)

“As a DM with a lack of descriptive prowess I found this book and it’s campaign dungeon dressing to be invaluable tools…”

Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands, softback adventure for Pathfinder

Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands, softback adventure for Pathfinder, by Creighton Broadhurst

“A ruined monument to folly and ego, the Shadowed Keep stands atop an isolated bluff deep in a mist-wreathed forest. Sacked by marauding goblins decades ago the place was thought abandoned, but shadows now creep among the forest’s great boles and footprints have appeared on the single, overgrown track leading to the keep. Travellers have begun to disappear with alarming regularity from the nearby road and the local folk fear some slumbering evil has claimed the ruin as its own.

Dare you brave the terrors of the Shadowed Keep to crush that which lurks within or will darkness shroud the surrounding lands?

Designed to be easily inserted into a GM’s home campaign, Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands is an excellent starting locale to test the mettle of neophyte adventurers.

Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands is designed for the medium advancement track. 1st-level PCs completing all the challenges of the place can expect to reach 3rd-level by the time they have exhausted all the keep has to offer.

Praise for Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands

“There is lots of content within these pages. The Shadowed Keep is an old school romp with bandits, undead, goblins, ogres traps and mysteries. As a GM this offers me the chance to run an old school game with modern thinking, editing and structure which makes it extremely easy to run.”

–Pierre Hall (five stars)

“it is all about the details in this particular adventure – the whole adventure makes for such an immensely detailed place, the foes and their tactics are so detailed that actually RUNNING the adventure is a blast, especially with all the things to show your players. Even better, the module provides quite a challenge… we had a surprisingly awesome time while clearing out the keep…I’ll settle for a final verdict of 5 stars for this very old-school module.”

-Endzeitgeist (five stars)

“…beginning GM’s pay attention. You can do little better than this module, that caters so well to organization and provides everything you need to run the encounters in a nice, clear format that’s a snap to navigate.”

–DM Jeff (five stars)

“Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands is an excellent adventure in terms of quality of design and possibilities for use. Every single room within the keep is extensively described and detailed, making the GMs job much easier, and the flavor of which change or grow as the PCs get deeper and deeper into the adventure, which avoids the feeling of repetitious or mundane. Don’t expect the same old thing when you enter a new room, because you will possibly be very surprised at what you find.”

-Roleplayers Chronicle (9/10)

“If you’re looking for a new module to kick off a 1st level PFRPG campaign, definitely check out Shadowed Keep on the Borderland from Creighton Broadhurst and Raging Swan Press. It has a little bit of everything and an open feel that gives your players room to explore at their pace.”

-Game Knight Reviews

“Following the background is a footnote suggesting how a GM might incorporated the Shadowed Keep into their own campaign, among which is put forth what is probably my favourite part of the module’s potential: once the party has cleared the keep, they might endeavour to claim and rebuild it themselves. Given the thorough detail and flavour of the environs throughout the module itself, I love this prospective aspect and feel that it could serve as the foundation for a campaign in and of itself.”

—Gozuja (five stars)

“I think Creighton Broadhurst presented one of the best old-school adventures I’ve seen recently, so naturally I give it 5/5 points, and highly recommend it.”

-Zoltán “Cain” Mészáros (five stars)

“Overall, Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands is an excellent way to kick off a new Pathfinder or D&D 3.5 campaign. It has a cool, old school feel – Creighton has said it’s his homage to the Moathouse from T1 on his blog – and presents a detailed adventure setting, full of memorable and fun encounters. Highly recommended.”

-Richard Green (five stars)

“This is a brilliant re-visit of the old “Dungeon Module T1” concept. Others have given very detailed reviews which I agree with.”

–Daniel H (five stars)

“Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands is easily one of the most thoroughly detailed and entertaining modules I’ve ever read. The attention to detail is staggering and far surpasses any other module I’ve ever read in my almost 30 years of playing RPG’s in general and D&D in particular. I don’t normally review products I purchase, but in the case of Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands I am making an exception for such an exceptional module. I highly recommend this module to any aspiring GM.”

–David T (five stars)

“The Shadowed Keep on the Borderland is an excellent starter module…Raging Swan has captured that old school feel but has put a modern slant on their offering with greater detail, layout, extra DM information and guidelines making this the best of both worlds.”

–Auxmaulous (five stars)

“Yes this is worth the $ but it does open me up to wanting MORE from this publisher.”

–Rachael S (five stars)

“I highly recommend this for any GM who wants an adventure full of flavor and excitement.”

Dwellers Amid Bones (Collector’s Edition), softback adventure for Pathfinder

Dwellers Amid Bones (Collector’s Edition), softback adventure for Pathfinder, by Creighton Broadhurst and Fabian Fears

“Lurking in the watery depths of a fallen orc tribe’s sacred burial cairn amid the bleached, broken bones of savage warriors, honoured champions and mighty warlords the forest drakes Arduthal and Ingeirmaugh have made themselves a comfortable, safe home. Periodically emerging to ravage the surrounding countryside their depredations have reached such a level that Baron Liofa Othen begs the PCs to slay the foul beasts.

The cairn’s remote location, inundated, bone-choked passageways and the vengeful, possessive ghost of the orc champion Gork Shattershield, not to mention the drakes’ mistaken identity as green dragons, all stand in the way of the PCs’ victory.

This is a Collector’s Edition version of the original module. It includes new material detailing the nearby village of Arcmoor and the surrounding territory.

A Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Compatible Adventure for 5th-level characters.

Praise for the Original Dwellers Amid Bones

“Dwellers in Bone from Raging Swan press is the perfect example of a side trek”

–KTFish7 (five stars)

“Dweller Amid Bones is an unpretentious, short little sidetrek that probably won’t last you for more than one or half a session, but it’s a smart one that has something to do for less combat-focused characters as well as a nail-bitingly exciting combat that may draw the PCs through the whole 5-room dungeon. This adventure could have very easily sucked, which, at its shortness, would have been a death knell. But the monsters actually for once acting not like complete morons is such a joy to behold that I kept smiling while reading this.”

–Endzeitgeist (five stars + seal of approval)

“When looking at pre-made adventures one of the questions I think a GM really has to ask is if the money on the product is worth the time it will save the GM, and I think this product is a good example of a guilt free “yes”.”

–ShoulderPatch (five stars)

“This is an awesome product, and in terms of the layout I honestly think that this one is better than the last one I reviewed.”

–Golden-Esque (four stars)

Praise for the Collector’s Edition

“FANFARE! GLORY TO WHATEVER DEITY OR FORCE MADE CREIGHTON WRITE THIS!” (The caps are his, not mine!)

Retribution (Collector’s Edition), softback adventure for Pathfinder

Retribution (Collector’s Edition), softback adventure for Pathfinder, by Creighton Broadhurst

“In the frozen depths of winter, murderous winds mercilessly batter the crumbling Priory of Cymer. Within, trapped by their duty and the heaped snowdrifts that render travel near impossible, the few remaining faithful huddle together and tend the sacred places of their forbears. With the weather worsening, nerves fray and tempers snap as the wind howls its mournful dirge for the forgotten dead of a fallen time. But the worst is yet to come. One of those trapped within holds a murderous grudge that only blood can expunge and as the storm reaches its savage height terrible revenge is wrought amid the frigid halls and faded glories of a bygone age.

This expanded, reorganised edition of Retribution features new art and new text.

Raging Swan Press Exists Because of Retribution

Praise for Retribution Collector’s Edition

“You literally have no reason not to get this gem and having it as a print edition made me feel all fuzzy and warm. This has its place on my shelf of honor and is truly a must-own for any PFRPG-DM’s module-library.”

–Endzeitgeist (five stars + seal of approval)

“Having played through this adventure, I can say I enjoyed it thoroughly.”

–Benjamin N (five stars)

‘This is a great module and worth picking up.”

–Paul Q (five stars)

“I could certainly see myself running this or playing this as I think it hits all the right buttons for being a classic adventure that is well designed with opportunities for different types of players to have their moments in the sun, or the snow as the case maybe.”

–Sethvir (five stars)

“Overall, this product was excellent, and I heartily recommend it. Whether you need an adventure on the fly, or you want to flesh out your campaign with a well thought out location and encounters, this adventure will do that and more.”

–Lorathorn (five stars)

“A fantasy roleplaying campaign can always use spooky, atmospheric low-level adventures, and RETRIBUTION is a solid, useful foray. It’s “old school” in the best sense of that term: the adventure, its setting, its characters, and its new elements have all been carefully and lovingly detailed and thought through. The result is truly ready-to-use, and its elements lend themselves to easy re-use in an ongoing campaign. Recommended.”

–Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms

“A gripping gothic yarn. Retribution is one part classic pulp, one part Name of the Rose, and all around a compelling narrative with exciting encounters and absorbing NPCs. It will no doubt leave a lasting impression on every adventurer who dares winter on the Lonely Coast.”

–Stephen Radney-MacFarland

“I think this the best written PFRPG intro adventure available out there.”

–Darren Ehlers (five stars)

“Retribution ranks among the best first level adventures I’ve ever read. It’s not over the top, it’s personal. And it’s better off for it. Check it out. It’s better than almost any first level adventure I’ve read for PFRPG and its predecessors.”

-Endzeitgeist (five stars plus seal of approval)

“I was seriously blown away by the richness and depth of this module. Seriously, Creighton is missing his mark by writing RPG modules and should be doing Fantasy Fiction.”

-DrDeth (Amazon Top Reviewer; five stars)

“Bottom Line: One of the best entry level adventures I’ve read in 25+ years. Good mix of role playing and combat that forces the players to think, not just react. Clever and logical use of some classic low level monsters. Strongly recommended.”

-Eric Olson (five stars)

“Upon receiving this in the post I opened with great trepidation but was incredibly impressed. The quality of the writing as well as the technical detail which the author has paid is superb. Much of the tedious tasks such as travelling times etc are worked out and this leaves oddles of time to deliver the module with the energy and feeling it deserves…This for me has restored faith in publishers and 3rd party material.”

–JahAbs84 (five stars)

“This is the best 1st Level adventure module I have ever read, period.”

–William M (five stars)
